Consumer Complaints
"DON'T HIRE this person", they took my money and left, they robbed me, they did a poor job, they didn't show up, they were late, they won't answer their phone, they have ghosted me, they wouldn't do this or that, they had an attitude me, etc.
These complaints are one of the most common posts that you come across on social media platforms. It is society's newest form of delivering 'word of mouth' as an attempt to warn others of the crooks or poor service that they have come across. It serves as a type of 'review' and can be beneficial in any case, but most importantly regarding con artists and slugs who's goal is to take other people's money and run.
Unfortunately those posts are usually quite vague and rarely come with a person's name, a company name (that's if it is an actual company), a contact number, a website or physical location, a photo, or a description of any kind. Therefore it is rare that there is ever any accountability for their actions or lack there of!
Additionally, the lack of detailed description doesn't serve as any type of solid reference for the readers to identify the person or entity in order to avoid using their services. So ultimately the purpose of their complaint only serves as a rant to express their displeasure and nothing more.
Most importantly, the bad guy gets away with yet another scam. In many cases taking another $100. bill for NO services rendered, or a job that is incomplete! And there is absolutely no accountability for their behavior! Meanwhile the consumer still has a leaky pipe, a broken window, or whatever their needs happen to be.
Consumers need to be a little more diligent about their search for services! Investigate, read the terms and conditions on their website, inquire on other reviews, etc. Too often people are looking for the cheapest route to solving their needs, and settle for some random person who has absolutely no credentials, let alone skill set, and is only selected because he has the lowest bid to do the job. When they discover that this person doesn't know what they are doing, or has literally robbed them blind, they get mad, RIGHTFULLY SO!! But they also need to get mad at themselves for not taking charge, by investigating a person further before accepting their offer. People get desperate and in a hurry to solve a problem, and become the next victim. Every consumer must be accountable for their actions and accept the responsibility for the decisions they make. And learn to make better choices.
The implications this experience often affects small business
The next common post on social media platforms are "Why does this industry cost so much money? - It's not hard!" Yet they themselves don't want to do it or they physically are unable, or they don't have the expertise to do it successfully. However they only want to pay pennies on the dollar for someone else to do it. And this stigma is particularly an issue for small businesses!!
If it's a big corporation, they expect and will pay a rediculously over priced amount for the services rendered, but if it's a small business they expect less than it's true value.
They don't try to talk down a large company, who is making a fortune...by the millions. But they will sure try to talk down the small businesses who are trying to earn an honest living but are barely paying their bills!
According to many consumers, the service from small businesses aren't considered "professional service", and instead it is treated as a "simple task" and most importantly they have very little appreciation and value for what they do!
All due to a stigma and lack of appreciation for others people's resume, hard work, dedication, knowledge and expertise, quality workmanship, training, experience, professionalism and over all work ethics.
The old trade and barter system is fundamentally based one key factor..."VALUE"!
The bottom line regarding this stigma is that people do not "appreciate" what they do not value! Or perhaps I should say they don't place any real "value" on that which they don't appreciate! (Process that however you like, they mean the same)
If the consumer doesn't have any or too little value due to a stigma of 'un'-worthy services, that creates a big challenge for small businesses to thrive! And there's a misconception that the consumer has the right to set the rate of pay when it comes to some industries, but not others. Consumers will try to bargain with the service provider, instead of accepting the rates the business has set for their services and either accept their offer or simply move on more suitable for their needs.
So why does it cost more?
Small business that are “licensed and Insured” is officially registered to operate within the state, city, and county; which ensures accountability and compliance with local and state regulations.
Insured means the company carries general liability and sometimes workers’ compensation coverage. Why workers compensation? Because hiring someone who is not insured CAN cause you to be sued if someone slips and falls on your kitchen floor because you spilled something, and they don't have insurance to cover their medical expenses! Most people don't think about what their own liabilities are, only what the service providers liabilities are.
Their policy is "protecting both parties" if something gets damaged or someone is injured while providing your service, and it happens more than you think!
These protections also show that a company takes its responsibility seriously, both legally & ethically. And it protects you from the risks that often take place. And their insurance policy is part of what your payment covers, and it’s worth every dollar!
Licensed small businesses operate under policies. They are vetted! They show up on time, use professional-grade equipment and products, and follow consistent procedures.
They also value communication and transparency. They have terms and conditions listed on their business website. You’ll have their contact information, business information, clear scheduling, and usually some type of guarantee.
Small businesses cost more than the random guy looking for a side gig because there are licensing fees, insurance premiums, background checks, administrative services (taxes, etc.), expensive equipment, supplies, and training. These aren’t “extra” costs, they’re essential investments that protect both you and the business.
Choosing a small business that is vetted is imperative for your safety, security, and peace of mind. When you hire a licensed and insured business, you’re not just paying for that service; you’re paying for a guarantee that your space and belongings are protected by professionals who take their business seriously.
Final thought: The cheapest option is rarely the best one. Choosing price over value usually results in you getting what you paid for!
